With the advent of high-quality LEDs and intelligent lighting systems, coupled with the discovery of a third photo-receptor in the human eye, the value of lighting is moving from energy efficiency to the wider spectrum of quality of life and improved well-being. The Strategic Roadmap of the Global Lighting Industry charts these developments and draws out important implications for lighting users, for the lighting industry, and for regulators and governments.

Lighting + well-being

The value of lighting is moving from energy efficiency to the wider spectrum of quality of life and improved well-being.

The discovery of a third photo-receptor in the eye (photoreceptive retinal ganglion cells), in addition to rods and cones, has recently led to the realisation that human biological rhythms, cognitive performance and sleep quality are influenced by light conditions. It is now understood that light has pronounced beneficial effects - both physiological and psychological.
